D&D Character Guide

Ability Scores

In Dungeons & Dragons, a character's ability scores represent their natural talents and capabilities. Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma make up the six core attributes. These form the foundation of every character's skills and actions. Each one describes a different aspect of who your character is, whether it be physical or mental.

Ability scores are more than just numbers; they determine how well a character performs in various situations. It can affect things like attacking an enemy, dodging danger, solving puzzles, or persuading someone in conversation. Higher scores give your character a better chance of success, while lower ones can give your character flaws and challenges that make gameplay more interesting and fun.

Typically when creating a character, you want to determine a character's ability scores based on their class. For example, a rogue would do best with a high Dexterity score, while a wizard would do best with high Intelligence. Certain subclasses may change which ability scores you want to prioritize, however. None of these are hard rules, of course. You can always try mixing it up to make an interesting character if you want!

Dice Roller

This is one method of determining your character's scores. Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest for each ability score. You can then decide which score is used for which ability for your character.
